This drama was
written in 1968 by one of the greatest Serbian and
world-renowned writers, Danilo Kis, who was commissioned to
adapt Euripides’ Elektra. Kis soon discovered a strong parallel
with contemporary times and the bloody Balkan history, which
inspired him to create a new drama that completely changed the
psychological and ethical nature of the original play.
Born to a
Montenegrin mother and a Jewish father, Kis has felt the dark
colours of inheritance – a concept of revenge that remains
vibrant in Balkans – against which he fights.
In comparison with
antique sources, Kis's Elektra offers a clear and certain
solution to tradition and dogma. Elektra’s determination to
pursue a bloody and unstoppable chain of revenge is no longer
the will of the Gods, but rather elevates the act of revenge to
a universal cult of individual will with the belief that all
have the right to execute superior judgment on others. |
